β-sheet, then explore secondary and tertiary protein structure.
This kit allows your students to build each of 2 important protein
secondary structures – an alpha helix and a beta sheet. After joining
together the magnetic backbone amino acid units to form the 2
structures, your students will actually feel the stabilizing effect of
the hydrogen bonds as they are added to the backbone units. Then your
students can add amino acid side chains, modeling specific α-helices and
The models are made of plaster in ball and stick format and follow the
standard CPK color scheme. They will break if dropped, held tightly or
handled roughly. The kit contains 11 alpha helix pieces, 10 beta sheet
pieces, 11 hydrogen bond pieces and 30 side chains.
